This study examined credit access and enterprise profitability across fish producers, marketers and processors in Delta State, Nigeria. Data were collected from 340 respondents comprising 140 producers, 120 marketers and 80 processors selected through a multistage sampling procedure. Descriptive statistics, multiple regression and analysis of variance were employed. Cooperative societies were the main source of credit, accounting for 59.1% of respondents, followed by moneylenders (55.3%) and microfinance banks (37.9%); commercial banks and government programmes accounted for 20.0% and 16.5%, respectively. Credit access had a positive and significant relationship with profitability among producers, marketers and processors. The pooled estimate was also positive and significant, with the model explaining 64% of the variation in profitability. Scale of production was positively related to profitability, whereas operating cost had a negative relationship. Mean profitability was ₦75,000 for producers, ₦123,054.82 for marketers and ₦323,000 for processors, with significant differences between each pair of groups. Profitability varied significantly among the value-chain actors (F = 261.885, p < 0.001) as confirm by the Oneway ANOVA. The results show that credit access is positively related to profitability, but enterprise returns differ significantly according to position in the fish value chain. The findings point to the need for credit arrangements that correspond to the financial requirements of production, marketing and processing rather than treating fish enterprises as a uniform category.
