The aim of the study was to describe the biological characteristics of male patients with confirmed rare diagnosis of male breast cancer (MBC) in Slovakia. We retrospectively analyzed data from oncology centres from pathological findings in 67 men diagnosed with breast cancer in the period 2008 to 2013 in Slovakia. Each patient was assessed at the time of breast cancer diagnosis for age, estrogen receptor positivity and HER-2 positivity status. The results of the study showed that the average age of men at the time of diagnosis with HER-2+ status was 62 ± 2.5 years and with HER-2- status was 68 ± 3.1 years. Her-2 was overexpressed in 16 of the 67 patients (24 %) (Significant paired T-test, p = 0.0187) and estrogen receptors (ER) were positive in 54 of all 67 patients (81 %). Fourteen of the 16 HER-2+ patients were ER+/ HER-2+ (88 %), while 40 of the 51 HER-2- patients were ER-. The findings of this pilot study show that men with breast cancer were older than women at the time of diagnosis. Most patients with breast cancer had ER+ and HER-2- tumours. The evaluated biological characteristics of MBC in Slovakia are comparable with existing literature data. These results may help us to understand better the behaviour of MBC and improve therapeutic strategies for the management of male oncology patients in Slovakia.
