ABSTRACT This article titled "Basheer Lawal Muhammad's Traditional Orientation in Poetic Formation " is an attempt to explore the format of the poems of Mal Basheer Lawal Muhammad which is observed to be predominantly traditional. The article studied selected poems and eulogy, panageric and admonition. The article gave a brief account of the biography of the poet, explained the role of poets in Northern Nigeria's civilizational awareness. The article then centered on analyzing the poems with the aim of discussing it's features, formation and literary tradition as well as linguistic style of the poet. The article concluded that Basheer Lawal Muhammad's literary prowless is influenced by a number of great Nigerian Sheiks who doubled as literary icons, notably Sheik Usman Bn Fodio, Sultan Muhammad Bello, Sheik Abubakar Mahmoud Gumi, Sheik Nasiru Kabara, Sheik Adam Abdullahi Ilorin and the likes. The research discovered evidently that the poet read widely and his reading and research are output serve as foundation to his literary works.
