From the perspective of functional grammar, there are three metafunctions in language, experiential metafunction, interpersonal metafunction and textual metafunction (Halliday, M. A. K. 1994). This thesis will analysis the process of the protagonist’s identity construction from transitivity in experiential metafunction, so as to reveal the transformation of the protagonist’s identity and expose the process of identity construction. What’s more, this thesis also gives a new perspective to analyze the literature works and demonstrates the feasibility and practicability of analyzing novels in transitivity from functional grammar.
